Written By ~ Judy Griffin

Emaline Odum was born 4 APR 1836 • Bulloch County, Georgia and died 26 FEB 1916 • Wayne County, Georgia. She was the daughter of James Odum born 1796 • North Carolina and died 1860 • Liberty County, Georgia. Her mother was Mary Ann Thomas born 1799 • Bulloch County, Georgia and died 6 SEP 1849 • Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. Her siblings were: Elizabeth Lavicy "Vicy", Leonard Warren CSA, Oscar Isaac ODUM CSA, Godfrey ODUM, and Henry Washington ODUM.

Emaline's mother Mary Odum died in 1849 and the children were placed in different homes. The 1850 census shows Mary's sons Henry (age 13), Leonard (age 24), and Leonard's wife living in the same household in Liberty County, GA. Isaac(22)is living in Division 92, Wayne County, Georgia with his wife Elizabeth(22) and son Leonard(0). Godfrey (16) was living in Emanuel County, Georgia with Ezekiel and Sarah Clifton. Eveline (Emaline) Odum(14) was then living in the household of Henry Kicklighter (and wife), two households away from her brothers Leonard and Henry Odum.

Eveline Odum, also known as Emaline, married William Harvey of Bryan County about 1855. They moved to Appling County and finally settled in Wayne County. She was 25 years younger than William.

According to the 1860 census William and Emaline are living in Bryan County, Georgia and have three children, Eliza E. Harvey (born 1856), James H. Harvey(born 1857), John H. Harvey(born 1860).

In the 1870 census William (59)and Emaline (30) are living in Wayne County, Georgia and have four children, Henry(13), John(10), Godfrey(7), Leonard(6) and Madison (4). Their daughter Eliza E. is not in the household. I've found no more information about her. She may have died between 1856 and 1870 because in 1870 she would have been only 14 years old but she could have married and moved away. Their son Leonard (born 1863)can not be found after the 1860 census.

Also living in the household is Rachael Johnson (21), Domestic Servant, daughter of Daniel and Holly Knight Johnson. Between 1870 and 1880 Rachael Johnson gave birth to 5 children. Marion, Alice, Issac are documented as being the children of Godfrey Odum (Emaline's brother). The children were born between Godfrey's marriages to Rebecca Ann Moody and Victoria L. Moody. Rachael never married Godfrey or anyone else.

In the 1880 census William (70) and "Emily"(45) are living in Wayne County Georgia. Also living in the household is Rachael Johnson and her five children. Marion Johnson (later changed to Odum), Alice Johnson (later changed to Odum), Issac Johnson (later changed to Odum), Robert Johnson and Manning Johnson.

In the 1880 census Henry(21) (day laborer) and Jasper Harvey(18) (clerk in store) are living in District 334, Wayne, Georgia with James F. King(59), Louisa King(58),Rosa King (22) and William King)(24). Living next door is their brother John Harmon(19) (day laborer)and his wife Martha Highsmith Harvey(19) (housekeeper). I haven't found William Madison in the 1880 census.

In the 1900 census Emily is widowed, living in Screven, Ritch, Wayne, Georgia living with her son John Harmon Harvey and his family.

I've been told that William and Emily are buried in Screven City Cemetery, Wayne County,Ga. The plot has 5 slabs but no names.
